What’s It Like to Intern at Ocula? Thea’s Story

We’re always looking for new ways to challenge our ways of thinking, and to share our expertise in advanced data science and engineering.

A huge part of this learning journey is our internship program; we have had some fantastic interns join the team to develop our cutting-edge research in areas such as data science, industry research, benchmarking and more.

In this feature, we spend some time with one of our summer 2022 Data Science interns Thea Barnes to hear about her experience with us, and what is means for her career.

What did you enjoy most about interning at Ocula?

Throughout the internship, I most enjoyed working with my colleagues to solve problems. I learned so much from working closely on tasks with my supervisor and feeling able to ask other members of the team for help and advice. I really enjoyed observing and participating in discussions in the Ocula Data Science forums.

What was your greatest achievement during your time with us?

My proudest achievement was probably presenting some of my work in the Data Science forum. The work itself I was proud of, and I felt very satisfied that my code was being implemented in the main product, but I felt a greater sense of achievement from presenting the work to my colleagues.

How has this internship helped you to develop?

Going forward, the internship has increased my confidence in my technical abilities and provided me with a greater understanding of the direction I want to take my career in. At university, I’ve only ever done a couple of data science-specific modules, however, having been a data science intern at Ocula, I know this is an area that I now want to pursue.

That’s great to hear! Do you have any final reflections?

I would say that, for me, I couldn’t have asked for a better internship experience: I loved the work ethic, the freedom to explore and pursue what interests me, and particularly feeling like a real part of the team.

Thank you to Thea for her time and efforts with us.
