What’s It Like to Intern at Ocula? Nathan’s Story

We’re always looking for new ways to challenge our ways of thinking, and to share our expertise in advanced data science and engineering.

A huge part of this learning journey is our internship program; we have had some fantastic interns join the team to develop our cutting-edge research in areas such as data science, industry research, benchmarking and more.

In this feature, we spend some time with one of our winter 2022 Data Science interns Nathan Wooster to hear about his experience with us, and what it means for his career.

Doing an Engineering Design degree taught me the problem-solving skills needed to move into data science, but I wanted to get real-world experience in an agile and exciting company. Ocula has shown me how a company can be innovative and quick to implement new ideas in the eCommerce space.

I have learned so much from such an incredible team, and it has provided me with the necessary skills to transition into software.

What did you enjoy most about interning at Ocula?

I have enjoyed working with a forward-thinking group of individuals who all are willing to share their ideas and teach me new skills. It has also been great to work directly with the leaders of the company and see how a start-up works from a business point of view. Getting an insight into this side of the company is something unique to startups and I found this particularly interesting.

What are some of your key skills that you have learned?

I have improved my software skills, particularly Python, and have learned how to collaborate on git. I have also learned how to write automated tests, and get git repositories ready for deploying on the Cloud. I have also enjoyed demonstrating my work in team meetings and learning common planning tools such as Jira and Confluence.

What is your greatest achievement so far on your internship?

My greatest achievement is some of the investigation work that I have done to support the development and advancement of our Ocula Boost module. I built code for this aspect and it was run for insights provided to clients! Seeing how my work package fits into the overall product Ocula offers has been great.

How has this internship helped you going forward?

Working at Ocula has helped me understand what skills I want to develop in the future and which areas I want to go into. Coming from an Engineering background and trying to transition into software, Ocula has given me the skills and experience needed to start my career. I’m looking forward to the next step in my journey!

What would you say to someone considering an internship at Ocula?

If you hear about an interesting project you would like to be a part of, or want to understand more about, definitely ask. Ocula is very flexible and wants to give interns as much experience as possible. It is a great company to develop your expertise.

Thank you to Nathan for his time and efforts with us.
